Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon conducts cutting-edge international research for a changing world: Around 1,100 employees contribute to the tackling of climate change, the sustainable use of the world's coastal systems and the resource-compatible enhancement of the quality of life. From fundamental research to practical applications, the interdisciplinary research spectrum covers a unique range.

Institute of Membrane Research

The Institute of Membrane Research develops new membranes and processes for separation of substances. State-of-the-art equipment and methods for the synthesis, characterization and processing of polymers as well as membrane preparation, module development, process piloting and modelling of separation processes are the focus of research.

Cutting-edge Research

Software Developer, Physicist or EngineerDevelopment of an Electronic Lab Notebook and Electron Microscopy

Reference code: 50070810_4 – 2021/PM 3
Commencement date: as soon as possible
Work location: Geesthacht (near Hamburg)
Application deadline: December 1st, 2021

In our Institute of Membrane Research at Geesthacht, new membranes and membrane processes are developed for the separation of substances. For this purpose, we have extensive and modern equipment in microscopy, synthesis, polymer characterization as well as membrane technology. Digital data acquisition and the evaluation of large amounts of data by means of machine learning have become increasingly important. For this purpose, we are developing a web-based electronic lab notebook across the institutes.

For the area of the electronic lab notebook and the morphological characterization of membranes we are looking for a software developer, physicist or engineer (bachelor, focus on electron microscopy or web development) as soon as possible - initially as a maternity-leave replacement for 1.5 years. Part of the work can be conducted via home office. The position can be filled part-time in principle.

Equality of opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position.

Your tasks

  • participation in the development of the web-based electronic lab notebook (ELN)
  • further development of the ELN in cooperation with the existing team of developers with focus on frontend (Elm) or backend (Python, Django)
  • characterization of polymer membranes by high resolution imaging and analytical electron microscopy (TEM and SEM)
  • documentation and preparation of results for evaluation by the commissioning scientists as well as for presentations and publications

Your profile

Your professional profile:

  • completed bachelor's degree in physics, engineering, computer science or a comparable subject
  • experience in web development, ideally in Elm and Python
  • experience with modern analytical equipment is an advantage
  • professional experience in electron microscopic methods and/or in web development is an advantage
  • very good knowledge of English, both written and spoken; knowledge of German is an advantage

Your personal profile:

  • a systematic and goal-oriented way of working
  • a sense of responsibility and a high demand for quality in your work
  • enjoyment of working in a small team and the associated willingness and flexibility in the tasks involved
  • willingness to familiarize yourself with new topics
  • communication skills and openness to an international and dynamic working environment in science

We offer you

  • multinational work environment with ca. 1,100 colleagues from more than 50 nations
  • extensive options of vocational training (i. a. expert seminars, language courses or leadership seminars)
  • flexible working hours and various models to ensure the compatibility of family and career
  • excellent infrastructure, including a scientific in-house library as well as modern work spaces
  • remuneration according to the standards of the collective wage agreement TV-AVH including further social benefits
  • free employee advice - Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • childcare offers
  • Welcome Office, guest accommodation
  • canteen at the Geesthacht location

Then we are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive application documents (cover letter, CV, transcripts, certificates etc.) indicating the reference number 2021/PM 3.
